À la Conférence des Nations Unies sur l’Océan à Nice, j’ai porté un chapeau en forme de récif corallien, fabriqué à partir d’engins de pêche échoués et récupérés. Un hommage à la beauté des récifs et un signal d’alerte sur le blanchissement corallien, accéléré par le dérèglement climatique. Des rues de Nice aux espaces officiels, ce chapeau a déclenché des échanges partout. Les gens s’arrêtaient, posaient des questions, écoutaient. Preuve que l’art peut toucher là où les faits seuls n’y suffisent pas. Face à la pollution plastique, à la surpêche et à l’urgence climatique, la créativité n’est pas un à-côté. Elle fait pleinement partie de l’engagement. I was honored to present my piece Pillar of Life&nbsp;on the #ForCoral Pavilion at La Baleine, the public zone of the UN Ocean Conference. &nbsp;What started as a plan B — while waiting to confirm my Pillar of Life exhibit — turned into something unexpectedly powerful. At the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, I wore a coral reef hat I created from discarded fishing gear. It was a tribute to the beauty of coral ecosystems and a call to action on coral bleaching — a crisis worsened by climate change. From city streets to high-level spaces, the hat sparked conversations everywhere. People stopped, asked, and engaged — a reminder that art opens doors facts alone can’t. In the face of plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate breakdown, creativity isn’t a side note. It’s part of the work. Beyond being directly inspired by nature – REEF SAVER is an artistic representation of a coral reef – the project raises the question of our role in the disappearance of these essential ecosystems. REEF SAVER, a reference to “life saver”, is both a cry of alarm and an indicator of solutions via the highlighting of fishing net recycling initiatives.The project has received support from IFRECOR and Alexis Rosenfeld, leader of the 1 Ocean project with UNESCO, photographer, photo-journalist and professional diver. Through the representation of a reef undergoing bleaching – with the juxtaposition of half the surface already bleached and the rest bleaching before our eyes – the sculpture allows the viewer to SEE in a concrete way the impact of bleaching, in a different manner than through photography or by scubadiving. The discoloration will be correlated to a dynamic digital display of the year and expected rise in temperature compared to the industrial era. The bleaching of the reef– from 50% bleached to 90% - is based on the IPCC’s SSP2-4.5 scenario. Au-delà d’être inspiré directement par la nature –REEF SAVER est une représentation artistique d’un récif corallien– le projet pose la question de notre rôle dans la disparition de ces écosytèmes essentiels. REEF SAVER, une référence aux bouées de sauvetage («life saver» en anglais), est à la fois un cri d’alarme et un révélateur de solutions.Le projet à reçu le soutrien de l’IFRECOR et de Alexis Rosenfeld, porteur du projet 1 Ocean avec l’UNESCO, photographe, photo-journaliste et plongeur professionnel. La « mise en scène » d’un récif en cours de « blanchissement ». La juxtaposition d’une partie (50%) du récif blanchi et une partie (50%) qui se « décolorise » au fur et à mesure que l’on regarde, permettra de «VOIR» de manière concrète l’impact du blanchissement, différemment qu’en photo ou en plongée.&nbsp; La décolorisation sera corrélée à l’affichage dynamique de l’année et la hausse de la température par rapport à l’ère industrielle (selon le scénario SSP2-4.5 du GIEC). I led 5 days of awareness-raising creative workshops with schoolchildren and the general public. They made nearly 200 “ephemeral sea creatures” from beached plastic waste.&nbsp; Polo le Poulpe a passé l'été à Bordeaux où il a reçu beaucoup d'attention et des centaines de visiteurs ! J'ai animé 5 jours d'ateliers créatifs de sensibilisation avec des écoliers et le grand public. Get them involved in a recyclart project! That’s what I’m up to this spring/summer - in Marseille. I am building Polo out of plastic waste collected on beaches, from the kid’s homes and schools and from the shopping center where we have set up an atelier. There’s Polo - made out of plastic bottles, bubble wrap, an old parasol, mussel farming netting, and 240 suckers – but we are also building the reef on which Polo lives with coral, sponges, rocks and lots of critters! We are making the base on which all of the above will be placed as well - out of bottles too. Before leaving the atelier, the kids write a little message making a wish for the oceans. I installed a “pledge net” with some educational panels on water in general and plastic pollution of our ocean in particular. People (and lots of children!) made pledges, wishes and drawings for the blue planet. Le 9 juin 2018, j’ai participé à un grand événement sur le changement climatique, organisé par Alternatiba. J’ai installé un grand “filet à vœux” sur le thème de l’eau en général avec un focus sur la pollution plastique en particulier. Beyond being directly inspired by nature – REEF SAVER is an artistic representation of a coral reef – the project raises the question of our role in the disappearance of these essential ecosystems. REEF SAVER, a reference to “life saver”, is both a cry of alarm and an indicator of solutions via the highlighting of fishing net recycling initiatives. The project received support from IFRECOR and Alexis Rosenfeld, leader of the 1 Ocean project with UNESCO, photographer, photo-journalist and professional diver. REEF SAVER est un projet artistique ayant pour but la sensibilisation à la dégradation des récifs coralliens, les menaces pesant sur ces écosystèmes et, en particulier, l’impact du réchauffement climatique sur les coraux et la pollution plastique issue de l’industrie de la pêche. Au-delà d’être inspiré directement par la nature –REEF SAVER est une représentation artistique d’un récif corallien– le projet pose la question de notre rôle dans la disparition de ces écosystèmes essentiels. REEF SAVER, une référence aux bouées de sauvetage («life saver» en anglais), est à la fois un cri d’alarme et un révélateur de solutions. its “end of life” integrated at the design stage. In the long term, thanks to the project’s partners, the sculpture will be recycled by fishing net recycling specialists. The recycled material will then be transformed into objects, numbered and accompanied with an explanatory booklet, to be sold or auctioned off for the benefit of an NGO working on coral restoration.&nbsp; Finally, the production of a documentary video will keep a trace of the project and allow REEF SAVER to continue to raise awareness after the recycling of the work. L’œuvre s’inscrit dans une démarche de circularité avec une « fin de vie » prévue dès sa conception et faisant partie intégrante du projet. À terme, grâce aux partenaires du projet, l’œuvre sera recyclée dans une filière spécifique de valorisation de filets de pêche. La matière recyclée sera transformée en objets. Ces derniers, numérotés et accompagnés d’un livret explicatif, seront mis en vente au profit d’une association œuvrant pour la préservation des récifs coralliens. Generally made out of nylon, it is not biodegradable... Every year millions of sea mammals and birds die, entangled in fishing rope and ghostnets.Some of my weavings are done using oyster pouches which are also made out of plastic. These are prevalent in certain regions in France (Brittany, Vendée, Normandy) where oyster farming is present.&nbsp; Les cordes de pêche sont parmi les débris les plus fréquemment trouvé sur les plages en France. Généralement fabriquées en nylon, elles ne sont pas biodégradables... prints are made from plastic debris found on beaches. Through this graphic exploration of the use of debris which hopes to draw attention to the issue&nbsp;through figurative representations of sealife – a more concrete way of putting the focus on the fantastic creatures whose lives are at stake. Each unique print is made on handmade or Korean paper using a variety of plastic pieces. Cette série d’empreintes est faites à partir de déchets plastique trouvés sur des plages. Par cette exploration graphique autour de l’utilisation des déchets, j’espère attirer l’attention sur le problème à travers des représentations figuratives de la vie aquatique – une manière plus concrète de mettre l’accent sur les créatures fantastiques dont la vie est en jeu. Chaque impression unique est faite sur du papier fait main ou du papier coréen en utilisant une variété de morceaux en plastique. Silent screams. Words that came to mind during this surreal period. Each unique print is made on handmade or Korean paper using a variety of plastic pieces. Cette série d’empreintes, réalisée lors du confinement 2020, est faite à partir de déchets plastiques trouvés sur des plages. Cris silencieux. Des mots qui me sont venus à l’esprit pendant cette période surréaliste. Chaque empreinte est unique, imprimée sur du papier coréen à partir de déchets divers.
